About LS Cattle
LS Cattle Company is owned and operated by Dave Sietsema and his son, Traden Lockwood on the grass covered prairie on the eastern slope of the Black Hills near Hermosa, South Dakota. The magic of the prairie comes alive in the rolling hills and meandering creek that runs through the O'Neill Family Ranch where the cattle are raised on open country and hard grass. These sometimes harsh conditions are the proving grounds for their registered herd.
We believe cattle that do well and grow well in these conditions can and will do well anywhere. Our Bulls and females are fed on hard grasses year round and receive no grain or cake in their development. We breed muscle and structure—we don't feed it.
All of our bulls are kept in a large pasture east of the ranch all year, except for the herd bulls that strike out with the cows in late May and early June. Our sale bulls spend two years on these grassy hills and draws so their feet and their grit are proven day in and day out here in South Dakota. Our focus is on cattle that are structurally correct and bred to cross well with commercial cattle anywhere in the country. Our females are bred with calving ease in mind. In the past two seasons we have not touched our females during calving, all going unassisted. Above average Milk, Growth, and cattle with good carcass numbers is our goal. We are breeding the kind of cattle that other seedstock growers will be interested in, but our focus is on the commercial cattleman.
We are a Line 1 herd with heavy influence from the Holden and Cooper Hereford herds. Our AI Sires (HH Advance 8008, Cl 1 Domino 9135G and HH Advance 8132) have currently been only from those two sources that trace back to the Miles City herds and more than 75 years of closed herd management. We believe, as they do, that profitable carcass traits, highly fertile females, and good mothers are some of the steps needed to make cattle that will increase profitability for ranchers throughout the United States.
For us, this venture is a dream shared by a father and a son to find honest work that focused on family and gave us opportunity to share our passion and love of animal agriculture. Next Generation as part of the solution,
God Bless,
Dave & Traden
We breed for good disposition, moderate birth weights, eye appeal, cattle that gain efficiently and finish well. We place a ton of emphasis on the maternal side to leave highly maternal, durable females.
To help us achieve this, our cattle are heavily influenced by Zens Herefords. We focus on a strong line-1 influence, while they still go back to some Canadian bloodlines and other horned blood lines as well. Zens Herefords have almost 70 years of serving commercial cattleman throughout the United States. These productive and functional females will improve genetics, EPDs and maternal excellence in any herd.
